The Ring of Brodgar stone circle on Mainland, Orkney was built over five thousand years ago.
It stands on the slopes of an isthmus, surrounded by land, water and monuments.
The archaeologist, Colin Richards, describes it as "a central point, an axis mundi, of the physical and cultural world." The stone circle is inseperable from its natural-cultural landscape; the horizon flows through its borders as you stand within its centre.
